| I suppose I had read other history books before I read this book at age 12. However, this is the book that hooked me on history.
Our media, books, television, films, are full of the American Revolution and its heroes and heroines now, but back in 1952, things were pretty quiet on the American History front. | This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. I never heard of it growing up, and my parents were diligent in providing us with the classics. Even today most of the customers in my bookstore don't know it exists. This is a crime, because it belongs right up there with Alice in Wonderland and The Wind in the Willows. It's a fantasy about a bored little boy who gets into a magic car and goes through the phantom tollbooth into a land of adventure. | This is a very rare book, luckily I came across it in 5th grade, and it was definitely a book to die for. It was an accurate, unique, and imaginative story about two children who befriend a strange and creative man who introduces them to a world filled of new and unique animals, plants, and many different things. This world could only be realistic if you imagined it. Soon they found themselves in a great adventure to meet the last of the really great Whangdoodles, and save the existence of the Whangdoodles kind. |

| I got this book a long time ago when I was little, and even though some of the content was no doubt too old for me at the time, I still loved it and never grew tired of reading the book.
I use this as my guide to greek mythology still - the pictures are gorgeous, and the stories well done. I'd recommend this for any Greek mythology lover. |
