| I picked this book up at our local library on impulse. I didn't think it'd be a huge hit with my youngest (2 years old), but thought my early readers might enjoy it. Turns out I was half right. My 2, 4 and 7 year olds all love this book! My 10 year old volunteers to read it to them daily. After having a library copy for only a few days I realized this one needed to be added to our personal collection. | This book seems very odd for an American Child. The human farmer is lazy and makes the duck do all the work while he lays in bed and eats sweets. The other farm animals are shown as typcial animals (the duck must husband them) until they decide to overthrow the lazy farmer who is living off of the ducks hard work. The other animals run the farmer off of his farm. The duck finds out the next morning and then the other animals suddenly join in the work. Ends with them all working co operatively togetherly. ... | This is one of our favorites, both for my girls (age 6 and 10) and for my preschool classes. One thing most important to me in children's literature is language, grammar and sentence structure that is rich, varied, and clever. If you read a sentence each out of a stack of random Disney, Sesame Street or other character books, they all sound the same in terms of vocabulary and structure. | The story is really gentle and charming with a nice message that is relatable with young children who are starting to want to be more independent. Our 22 month old daughter can relate to all the things the little bear is doing. And the caring relationship with the parent is nicely portrayed. It is illustrated with soft watercolors. The graceful compositions and lighting make the book interesting to look at. |
