I've seen this book for a while now and heard/read many good things about it. And yet, for some reason, reading the summary on the back didn't drive me to read it...until this last week. For those who don't know, the gist of the story is that there is a "china doll rabbit" that a little girl has named Edward Tulane. She loves him immensely. Unfortunately, one day, Edward gets lost and begins a journey.

The synopsis reminded me a bit of the movie Toy Story. As I started reading, I was ... Read More:

I've been looking for a way to broach the subject of homelessness with my two sons, ages 6 and 4. I'm trying to teach them to be thankful for their blessings and to look for opportunities to help the less fortunate. It was with this intent that I came across this picture book.

The WWII-era story begins in Frances' apartment, where she looks down on an old man, an organ grinder and his monkey working the cold, snowy corner of Fifth and Vine before Christmas. Frances is troubled by the man's plight ... Read More:

I am always looking for good books with lessons or messages- this is one of those books. The idea of giving is always a good idea. It has many words on the page making it more enjoyable as a read aloud or for older children. It is definitely one of our "read at Christmas time" each year books! Hope you'll give it a try.

I never especially liked Cinderella. She seemed a little too self-pitying, and her way out of her miserable situation was to become beautiful (thanks to a fairy godmother's magic) and "catch" a man with that beauty. But I love what Diane Stanley has done with the old story.

For one thing, Bella has much more going for her than beauty. Let me take that back - Bella has more going for her than external beauty. She has to be one of the most pure-hearted characters I've encountered in my reading, yet Stanley ... Read More:

I was very dissatisfied with this book. It does have excellent illustrations, but the text is rather lacking. It doesn't have a storyline, more of a rhyming description of each picture in the book. For me, it serves a picture book.

A superlative work. So beautifully illustrated, and written with great grace. That rare thing: a modern classic with an actual plot, tenderness, and context!

The artwork is beautiful and includes reproductions from medieval illuminated versions. (It's extremely annoying that you can't search inside the book, so you'll have to take my word for it.) The approach is sophisticated, leaving as an open question whether Marco Polo embroidered the truth or made up his tale out of whole cloth, and children will learn about Kublai Khan's empire, with its efficient messenger service and paper money. The vocabulary is challenging for grade-school children.

This is a beautiful book with a nice story. I purchased one for my son, but after seeing what a nice book it was, ordered a 2nd to give as a gift.

This beautiful picture book should be read aloud, even if you are reading it aloud to yourself, because the sea-shanty rhythm of the text adds a musical depth to this gorgeous and haunting narrative. I should have been too jaded to enjoy this--in the course of writing my own picture book on the Loch Ness monster, I read a bunch of sadly soggy sea serpent stories. But M. T. Anderson's contribution to the genre rises way above that waterline. The tale is plot-driven enough for younger children and monster afficionadoes, but also had emotional ... Read More:
