No new information in this book. Friedman took the title from the last book he wrote and extended it to one that appears to love the earth.

The author of this book and I have two things in common (at least): We are lawyers and we truly care about the First Amendment rights of Americans. Anyone who shares affection for the First Amendment should read this book. It contains a lot of well documented rebuttal to the more extreme global warming fear mongering, and what it says about how our kids are turned against us with global warming propaganda is enough to scare anyone, but the truly frightening part of the book is about the systematic suppression ... Timely published, excellent argument, thorough research... Jones lays out, in well organized fashion, how an aggressive commitment to transition into a green economy via green collar work (work that brings dignity to the underserved communities of the United States) can bring back the US economy, fulfill the dream of true equality, and keep Earth alive for the sake of our future generations.

Great topic, this would have been an excellent 20-30 page paper. It turned instead into a disappointing and wordy 275-page book. While thought-provoking, long sections (second third for example) aren't engaging and it takes serious dedication to keep reading. All the chapters about infrastructure degradation quickly become repetitive and boring.
The book is overall mostly descriptive with limited speculations (towards the end). I am sympathetic to the criticisms of the consumerist society we live, but the author tends to rant ... Read More:

I have read many books on history and biography. Egan's work is probably the finest of them all, bar none. To amplify this, after I finished reading the book I turned to page one and immediately read it again. It is that extraordinary.

Egan did such a magnificent job that sometimes I felt as though I was reading Charles Frazier's prose instead of history. Yes, the storms came and continued coming for 5 years, but I found every page of his presentation of life on the Great Plains during the Dust Bowl captivating. The manner by which ... Read More:

6.Collapse (Allen Lane Science) by: Jared M. Diamond

Books : Collapse (Allen Lane Science)
I loved the first half of the author's "Guns, Germs, and Steel". So I bought this book. Unfortunately this book is just awful.(However, if you especially liked the second half of that book, you are likely to like this book too!)

In terms of content, some key facts are more contested than Diamond assumes, e.g. the Easter Island case. That makes one question other chapters as well.

In terms of style the book is just awful. I don't know what makes the book very, very tedious to read. Maybe the number of pages. Maybe because I get ... Read More:

This book is easy to read and comprhensive. It even tells a person how to start a garden in the spring. Great for first timers who didn't know to get the garden prepared the Autumn before. It also provides lists on which veggies are easy to grow and hearty and which require more care and are delicate.

McDonough & Baumgarten have re-envisioned how companies might redesign their manufacturing processes to actually leave the environment better than they found it. And create better products in the end, products that people will want to buy because they are well-designed.

What I love about this book is that their vision is mostly a PRIVATE sector solution. They believe that business is the solution, not the problem. They say entrepreneurs are the ones best suited to develop creative solutions to environmental issues, and ultimately better, less expensive ... Read More:

It is a rare science book that evokes such an emotional response in me. "Beak of the Finch" by Jonathan Weiner is one, and "The Botany of Desire" is another. Pollan's discussion of four archetypal plants (apple, tulip, marijuana and potato) and our shared history with them makes for some wonderfully interesting reading. He has a great gift for allegory and metaphor, and these plants became real characters that I cared about deeply. Sprinkled with just the kind of details that I love most, the book reads like a daydream of a letter from home. Here are some examples of what I ... Read More:

I am completely satisfied with my purchase of Life's Classic Collection. I remember seeing many of these photographs when my parents subscribed to the weekly copies of Life in the 1950s and I have already framed and mounted several photos on the wall of my study. They make a great addition to my collection.
