| I have all the books from the Learning to Get Along series. They are wonderfully illustrated and written. These are great social story books to help kids. I use them for my son and for the kids I work with at school. My son (5) will just sit and read this books on his own. I absolutely recommend Cheri J Meiners books. (I even have a link on my website for her books)
At the end of every book are ideas and games to play about the specific topic. What a great idea!!! |

| This is my new favorite book. Myron Uhlberg's beautiful picture book connects the plight of suffering racial discrimination with being subjected to prejudice for having a disability. It connects the famous with the common. It will tear at your heart, and hopefully open it to know that change is possible; although often slow and painful. | I can't say enough good about this work. This is an example of two talented people who collaborated to create a work of art, far greater than simply the sum of "writing" plus "illustrating." This is magic. It is honest. It is challenging. And it's totally life- and spirit-affirming! It is not to be missed.

The picture are beautiful, the text is well-written and funny, the story is good... there is just one part that sort of sticks in my craw... at the end when the author makes the comment about armies not being able to think. It just didn't seem to fit - it seemed more like a gripe or a jab from the author. | Not a good book. I requested Special People, Special Ways from the library after finding it at Amazon.com. My wife (who has a physical disability) and I looked over it, and quickly determined that we would not be reading it to our kids. Outdated descriptors and an emphasis on differences make this a poor choice when trying to help children understand disability and diversity. | I was just browsing the shelves looking for something that might interest an adult but be easy enough for a 4th-grade reading level (I tutor adult basic education) and this book was a pleasant surprise. I ended up devouring the book, and my student enjoys reading it even though he's reluctant to start. Good characters and development, good amount of mystery. Disappointed with the ending, but overall very pleasant. |
