My daughters and I really enjoyed listening to this classic literature in long car rides. The story combined with the enchanting music made it all the more endearing.

Having borrowed this book from our public library I wanted a copy of my own to use as a resource for children's programming at our local historical society. It gives so much information and the illustrations are wonderful.

We enjoyed reading this book together. The story is about a fictional family set in pioneer days. Each chapter is a small independent story within the larger story of the family's Thanksgiving preparations; for example one chapter tells of a daughter sneaking out to gather cranberries to make a special dish for her ailing grandmother. Almost every other page is illustrated, and there are recipes and craft ideas scattered among the chapters and at the end of the book. The only reason I didn't give the book ... Read More:

This was a fantastic book. It is reminiscent of the American Girl Series in that the fact-based fictional character is an independent, progressively-minded girl of her time period, and in the way historical facts and photos are woven in with the fictional text. However, it is written in a much more sophisticated manner than the American Girl books, and provides more depth of information. We have read several of Barbara Greenwood's other books as well, and they are similarly beautifully written and illustrated.

I am a second grade teacher at a public school and we do a whole unit on Pioneers. My students loved this book. We read one or two chapters a day for about a week during the holidays. There are some very nice pioneer crafts and recipes that are included in the book. A Pioneer Christmas was a great addition to our studies about pioneer life. I would highly recommend.

This is an excellent book full of great activities for connecting to lessons. The only problem I have with it is that it is too thin! There are just not enough projects in it. It really could use more things to do and a few more historical tidbits.

The book is ok. It just wasnt what I was looking for. I wish I could have seen inside before I bought it. I work with young children and this is to much. But it would be great for older children.
