I purchaced this book because I was preparing a presentation about time management. It almost messed up my presentation, because it messed up my brain.
I tell you, It can actually be done. Work only 4 hours a week. But you have to do a complete reformat of your brain.
The concept of taks elimination and putting yourself out of the equation to avoid bottlenecks is super.
I am not quite there jet, but, now I work less and make more.
I definitelly recommend this book to weight ... Read More:

Books : Nightwatch: A Practical Guide to Viewing the Universe
An absolutely wonderful book; however, the numerous printing imperfections encountered (odd smudges, smears, and stains) have significantly detracted from the reading experience.
The book states that it was printed in China and it shows--really bad for a new book.
Perhaps whoever printed the book thought that one would be reading it mainly in the dark and would not notice the blemishes.
A five-star rating for content and 0-stars for print quality equals 3 stars total (more of less).

There are a lot of glowing reviews here and it feels strange to be the one dissenting voice, but let me explain. First, let's agree this book is for the layperson, not the Physics or Astronomy major, but for the person who simply likes science very much. I work in the auto repair business, but I've always loved science yet have no education in that field. I bought this on the strength of Ferris' DVD's which I've seen 2 of (Life Beyond Earth and Seeing in the Dark), and let me say they were very good (esp. the former).

I love this book. I've read a ton of books lately on the planets because of teaching a class on beginning astronomy for kids. This book presents the most interesting facts in the most interesting and compelling way. If I had not had this book to look at, my lessons would not have been as fun or exciting. The author writes beautifully, and has a nose for the intriguing. :)

Here's a highly readable account of the big cosmological picture as viewed at the end of a wild astronomical century. We now know that this universe is immensely bigger and almost immeasurably older than anyone remotely imagined back before 1900. Ferris is very good at explaining things. For example he elucidates why Kepler had such a ragged time trying to explain planetary motion -- he had the right concept for years, but persisted in attempting to fit the theory to perfectly circular orbits -- until he finally stumbled on the correct answer, ... A series of essays on the concept of Time in current Theoretical Physics. The papers were presented in 2000 following a tradition within the community of Physics. These topics honor Kip Thorne on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Thorne has investigated the possibility of actual time travel in current concept of Spacetime.

Igor Novikov provides arguments for the possibility of travel to the past, but concludes that it is impossible to change the past, which has already happened, including any effects of a future person traveling back into ... Read More:

Books : The World Treasury of Physics, Astronomy, and Mathematics: From Albert Einstein to Stephen W. Hawking and From Annie Dillard to John Updike - an Eloquent ... Than 90 of This Century's Best-Known Writers
Two of the worlds' most odious clichés relate to the scientific elite and are unfortunately often perpetrated by non-scientific academics. The first is that scientists crawl into an artificial environment and create monstrous things without regard to the consequences. The second is that the scientific upper-echelon finds it impossible to "lower" themselves to the level of everyone else. This collection of over 90 essays, written by the prime scientists of the 19th and 20th centuries, demolishes those beliefs.
The pioneers of modern understanding have ... Read More:

A friend gave me the audio tape version of The Minds Sky and I was so disinchanted with what I heard that I visited Amazon.com, read a couple of reviews then ordered the book version thinking I must have just missed ( again and again) the points and story line Mister Farris was putting forth. Fact is I didn't "get it" from the book version either - I have been amused, bemused and found some great themes opened up by Mr. Ferris but almost universally found his own comclusions to be way off the mark . The man does not know how to think. There is some flaw or serious ommision ... Read More:

Books : Perfectly Reasonable Deviations From The Beaten Track: The Letters Of Richard P. Feynman
Michelle Feynman has provided an important service in collecting the letters of her father in "Perfectly Reasonable Deviations." I was especially interested in the letters concerning his award of the Nobel prize. Despite receiving the most prestigious award in science, Feynman refused to take himself (or anything else) too seriously. My favorite exchange (pp. 163-164) begins with a letter from Sandra Chester who writes "Hail the Nobel Prize Committee for its recognition of your unsurpassed achievement in the field of bongo artistry." True to form, Feynman responded "I was delighted ... Read More:

I put off buying this book for an entire year. I figured that between the internet and my other coffee-table gee-whiz books, the last thing I needed was another book full of pretty pictures. I was so wrong. Take Rob Gendler's gorgeous astrophotos--there is a shot of Omega Centauri in here that makes me want to weep!--add concise, up-to-date descriptions, coordinates, seasonal sky maps, with every object ranked by right ascension, and you've got a pretty-picture book that doubles as a deep-sky guide and observing planner for backyard astronomers. Plus you will pick the book up just to leaf ... Read More:
