Certainly no doubt about the author's viewpoint and solid facts. Would love to read a book about where the exceptions of supply and demand do not apply.

As a layman wanting to get a clearer view of trade and distribution of resources, I purchased this book, as it seemed to have earned a lot of praise. I was disappointed for a number of reasons:

1. It lacks stringency. The facts and messages could easily have been conveyed in a book a third of its size, which would actually have made it more readable. I usually enjoy examples to illustrate statements, but Mr. Sowell makes the same point over and over and over and over again, just using different ... Read More:

I found very little useful information in this book. The author takes the most basic elements of economics and attempts to apply them to very complex issues. If you have any econ or business knowledge, save your money and look elsewhere.

For such a learned scholar (who has written such technical books as "Culture and Conquest"), Thomas Sowell writes some of the most delightful popular essays. "Ever Wonder Why" is a collection of his newspaper essays written in the last few years.

Sowell is very much a conservative with liberarian tendencies. (In one essay, he calls himself a "conservative radical.") For those who would classify themselves similarly, there is much to love in these essaya. For all others, hang on to your hats.

The book is divided ... Read More:

I had just finished reading Michael Dyson's "Is Bill Cosby Right?". Then I read this book of Sowell's. African Americans, including myself, have rejected Sowell out of hand because he does not line up with the orthodoxy of Dyson or the typical civil rights perspective. This is because I did not realize how thoroughly Sowell understands the issues and the philosophies behind it and the opposite views. You just do not realize his grasps on things if you go by what people say or get turned off by one of his articles in the newspaper. Not only ... Read More:

For those who have enjoyed Thomas Sowell's history books, this book reveals him as an astute psychologist too. Piggybacking off of Paul Johnson's thesis in "Intellectuals," the book delves into the psychology of being a liberal... of having a lofty, "anointed vision" of what humanity could be like but a condescending (and often inaccurate) view of people, individuals. He contrasts intellectual and aristocratic social engineers who have "the anointed vision" to the common and conservative individualists with "the tragic vision" to show that while the latter ... Thomas Sowell - brilliant, blunt, relentlessly honest - is a great wrecker of "enlightened" platitudes, the ideas one finds in newsrooms and faculty lounges, or wherever the "deep thinkers" of the Left come to celebrate their own originality and superior wisdom. Using economics as a scalpal - or a wrecking bar - Sowell shows that much of the "60's Liberal" talk about what's wrong with America - the word "discrimination" is often heard - is little more than bad statistics. Even worse, the remedies Liberals propose - e.g. affirmative action, AFDC, etc. - are ineffective and ... Read More:

Some reviewers have taken issue with the thesis of Sowell's title essay, questioning how much Southern blacks would have been exposed to the influence of poor whites. This is a legitimate objection, and Sowell's thesis may suffer from being too narrow in its characterization of Southern white culture. Which is to say, the characteristics he identifies with poor whites of mostly Scotch-Irish background were characteristics also of the white upper classes in the Old South, where the masculine ideal was the gallant Cavalier with his Hotspur masculinity and touchy sense of honor, ... The economist Thomas Sowell IS a hero, as well as a tough guy, as two other reviewers respectively describe him here, not only for his formidable intellectual accomplishments, but more important, for his lifetime dogged insistence on seeing things as they actually were, and unflinchingly reaching his conclusions based solely on the data and the rigorous application of logic to that data, no matter where that led him. I have never seen anyone with a greater commitment to the truth and to intellectual honesty, discipline and integrity.

I read this memoir because I had always ... Read More:
