I'll admit -- I put off reading THE ABSOLUTELY TRUE DIARY OF A PART-TIME INDIAN for well over a year, in favor of more "exciting" books. Boy, what a mistake I made!

Told from the perspective of thirteen-year-old Arnold Spirit, an intelligent, observant, sarcastic Indian born with encephalitis and a love of cartooning, Sherman Alexie takes us along with him as he moves away from a circumscribed, oppressive life on the Spokane reservation towards a more promising future by attending ... Written by Sherman Alexie, this fable about the hometown challenges of his own home town, makes a fine, sensitive novel.

This is the struggle of an Indian band - and it's this double entendre that is at the heart of his tale. Three Spokane Indians and two Flathead sisters form a musical group, which, in its character and pathologies, are a metaphor for Indians everywhere.

The band comprises two sisters, two lifelong friends, and a misfit. The sisters, Checkers and Chess Warm Water, members ... Read More:

I spent the past weekend soaked in Sherman Alexie. It was a pleasure to find out about Sherman Alexie (through his interview on KUOW's Weekday program). I really loved his short story collection Ten Little Indians. The stories reflect acute, honest observation of life, specifically from an Indian point of view. He doesn't sugar coat any flaws of Indians, or for that matter any other American. The genocide of Indians provides him with enough material to draw upon and every story made me laugh, cry and in some ways touched me deeply. ... Read More:

The stories in this collection are an interesting view of what it can be like to have one foot in Indian country and the other in the white man's world. While this bunch isn't as touching as Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in the Sky, it's still well written and compelling.

After reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian last summer, I decided to work my way through Alexie's oeuvre since I had already also read and enjoyed Reservation Blues. Two short story collections and one novel later, I was done. Not in that my task was completed but in that I couldn't take anymore. Then The Business of Fancydancing came into my possession after waiting about six months for it. Unwilling to let the book go after waiting so long for it, I decided to see what the first page was like. Ten hours later I had finished ... Read More:

Not surprisingly, as in any culture, there are many voices speaking for and about American Indians, representing them from many points of view. Alexie's is one, and the director of "Smoke Signals," Chris Eyre, is another. Reading the extensive notes at the end of this screenplay, where Alexie describes the creative decisions that went into the making of the movie, you can see how each of them pushed for a different vision of the material. And the end result is a moving and humorous film about damage done and the journey that leads to healing - a theme ... Read More:

"The sheets are dirty. An Indian health service hospital in the late sixties, on this reservation or that reservation, any reservation, a particular reservation. Antiseptic, cinnamon, and danker odors, anonymous cries up and down the hallways..."

Aside from "David Copperfield," and a few others, this opening is one of the strongest I have ever read. The story itself revolves around two mysteries: the primary is the mystery of John Smith's heritage. Though he's a full blood Native American, he was taken from his birth family and raised by whites ... Read More:

I wish all the pieces in this book ended like the piece "Split Decision". "When the bell rang at the end of the fight
after Joe Frazier had floored Ali with a left hook
you must remember that Muhammad Ali was still standing

he stood up."

There was some hope in that ending, but not in a lot of the others. This book made me very sad and angry about the past and what we as a people continue to do today. How much we have destroyed and how much we have missed by always wanting to ... Read More:
