How does one best capture the experience of stepping into a new land? Of leaving everything behind? Of stepping into a new life? Of hopes? Fears? Dreams? Encounters? Especially when one has had to leave their family behind? The Arrival does just that. This is brilliantly crafted to tell a story which works on many levels (my children enjoyed this as much as I did - though we took very different things from the novel).

I bought this book based on a kind of obscure blog recommendation. and I like it. and I don't know how to do justice to it. it is very visual.

there are better times ahead. I'm hoping for that.

I like the combination of blue, green, and red.

Let's get this out of the way first - it's an allegorical retelling of a frankly depressing tale; that of the fate of aboriginal cultures in the face of English colonisation, exploitation and genocide (both planned and unintentional). I agree with the reviewer who states that this isn't the best of kid's bedtime stories; I'd class it along side books about tricky to explain subjects like reproduction or puberty. It's one of those special books you might reach for when your kids come to you with a question that you ... Read More:

Books : The Lost Thing
This is the first online book review I've ever been moved to write.

The story is sophisticated (few kids' books I know of dare first-person narration; fewer still go beyond a neatly-put-to-bed ending), yet it is both accessible to a young audience, and engaging for the adults.

The Lost Thing is cinematographic in its detailed, industrial-style illustations. The matter-of-fact storytelling about an extraordinary experience somehow add to the magic.

This is one of the books my ... Read More:

An inspiration for art exploration, Shaun Tan creates wonderful montages and collages that carry a message to enrich and extend the text. This is a fine book from Australia, honouring the soldiers who fell and the memorials that were built for them, illustrating the threads of oral history that are passed through a family, and questioning "progress" and modern convenience in the town planning processes. Excellent material as social Studies and the Language Arts overlap and complement each other.

I am a great fan of Shaun Tan, and that's the main reason I bought this book, even though it did not look very promising.

In the beginning the book slightly reminds The Lost Thing, which is a masterpiece, one of the most beautifully illustrated and deep books. However, as the story develops, it becomes darker and, what is worse, meaningless. I could not find any lesson in the book.

Of course the drawings are good, Shaun Tan is always great. However, compared to his creations it is way less than ... Read More:

Loved the mix of styles here! Justin Randall's story of the broken loser seeking a return to greatness, Skye Ogden's disturbing portrayal of a childhood gone wrong, Shaun Tan's brief fantasy-scape and Terry Dowling's articulate introduction. The Mark Welsh story of a mechanic with a difference (with writer Daniel Burke) really stood out too.

While Shaun Tan is graphically exquisite, he is not a writer. I think he should stick with his art work and let someone else do the writing. Made very little sense, left no message at all. Just my opinion, Judy Hogan
