| Okay, I cannot figure out why I bothered to buy this book in the first place. Despite the fact that I live in Utah and have not spent a heck of a lot of time near the ocean, I have a weird fear of sharks.But guess what? Plenty of other people find them plenty cool! | This is a great book, but ...
If I were looking at this book with a child, I probably would not read the text. Mostly, the text makes the image more limited and precise and inhibits the imagination. I love Gonsalves's work, but I have one quibble about that, too: the violin in the picture "Listening Fields" is being played backwards, with the bow in the left hand. | I am a school librarian and I really loved this book. It helps to fill a nitch that is underserved - books for beginning readers that are interesting and well done. This book if chock full of facts about whales and they are presented in a very kid friendly way. An example, "Its tounge weighs as much as an elephant" is much better than the tounge weighs "X" pounds. The pictures are great as well. All in all, this book is a winner. | Goodness me, but I am always thrilled when I can find a non-fiction educational text that will actually entertain students. I have noticed that this line of readers manage to churn out some truly great stories. Or information, in this case of science books like this. This is filled with brightly colored photographs that manage to hit many of the major groupings of our reptilian friends and the text talks about biology, physiology, and the impacts of snakes on the environment and vise versa. | When I saw this book at the library, I thought, Good Grief! Another book about dragons. How original. There's only a zillion books out there about dragons. And another zillion books about a protagonist who finds a dragon's egg. But I thought since the editor had been an editor at a publishing company, maybe it would be good. It was VERY AVERAGE. The plot was definitely not original. The characters I've seen in other books. The dialogue was unoriginal. The ending wasn't very good. The book should have been edited ... Read More: |
