I've been thrilled with this little atlas because it is small, attractive, easy-to-use, and includes just enough detail.

I did a Messier marathon last year under a dark sky (Figueroa Mountain, CA) and found over 90 objects with my binoculars (12x60) using only my list and this atlas for reference. I was astonished that I could see objects dimmer than 10.0 magnitude in my binoculars, but this atlas made it so much easier.

I planned to sleep through most of the Virgo cluster, ... Read More:

I recently got interested in Astronomy, and saw the need for a good in-depth star chart. I must say that the Sky Atlas is wonderfull. It shows all stars to magnitude 8 i believe, and comes with a handy transperent insert which you can use to check the magnitude of stars and also has the telrad rings on it, so you can use a Telrad to point to things more accurately.

I bought this book because I was looking for a reference for all the double stars and deep sky objects shown in SkyAtlas 2000.0 charts that I could not find listed or old coordinates used in Burnham's Celestial Handbook made difficult to tell which is which. This is the one. For every object I am looking for data, this reference shows the mag, size, seperation. For galaxies it also lists the brightness, which is usefull and will help you to understand why you have spent endless nights searching for a mag ... Read More:

For years the Sky Atlas 2000.0 has been the most popular atlas step up from a 6th magnitude atlas. The 8th magnitude limit is deep enough to enable users to find Neptune and the brighter asteroids. The large charts, while they can be a bit awkward to handle, are great to view, as they show wide swaths of sky.

The Second Edition brought some significant improvements: a useful step up to magnitude 8.5, galaxy shapes which show size and orientation, better representation of star magnitude, detailed ... Read More:

Anyone with Sky Atlas 2000.0 would find this complementary volume invaluable. Every deep sky object shown in the Atlas is listed alphabetically and again, most usefully, according to the page in the Atlas on which it appears, together with a copy of the Atlas index map: thus when planning an evening's stargazing, it is not necessary to refer to the atlas until at the telescope. Integrated magnification and angular size are given for each object, which helps in choosing suitable eyepieces and saves trying to observe ... Read More:

I guess I'm old fashioned when it comes to using a telescope, but I prefer a paper atlas to laptops and software star atlases. And I also prefer star-hopping to using GOTO or setting circles. If you're like me, you already know you're buying this massive work. Yes it's expensive. Yes it weighs about twenty pounds. But it's the ultimate paper atlas for the star-hopper. The three volumes (each covering eight hours of RA) together have over one million stars plotted on their pages!

The binding and paper ... Read More:

Great reference star atlas as expected. Would recommend that anyone who orders this should also have a copy of the pocket star atlas (Sky & telecope publication, also available at Amazon) as well. In addition, if you are using an atlas outdoors in adverse weather, the Sky Atlas 2000, laminated edition is great to have. Only complaint was that of "false" advertising, in that the description of the item stated that it was a hardcover edition, which is not.

It's good to have every aspect of stars & galaxy

But it's not plotted for normal star observants.
