The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1)

Where do I go after Hogwart's? Well, one place you can go is Camp Half-Blood. The book definitely reminded me of Harry Potter. A young misunderstood kid finds out he is the heir to a fantastic heritage. He is the Son of Poseidon the Sea God. As mentioned this first book really felt quite a bit like it was borrowing from Harry Potter and substituting myth for magic, but the later installments took a different tack and ... Read More:

I enjoyed this book so much more than I did book 1. I liked "The Lightning Thief" but there were a few things about it I didn't enjoy, mostly the seemingly random monsters they encountered. I feel the author made a perfect move to take an existing story in mythology (the Odyssey) and use that has the basis of the plot. the story just flows better this way, IMO, and doesn't have than random "monster of the week" feel the first book had. I like the addition of Tyson to the story and the conflicts this ... Read More:

Big Red Tequila introduces Tres Navarre, the unlicensed private investigator, t'ai chi master and English Ph.D. However, in this first book in the series, Tres seems a smaller, humbler figure as he returns home to face the ghosts of his past, including the unsolved murder of his father and the girlfriend he abandoned ten years earlier. He receives a less than Texas-friendly reception as his very presence stirs up memories of the shooting of his father the Sheriff, as well as his decision to cut and run ... Read More:

This is my first Rick Riordan novel and it is my intention to read them all. It reminds me of Robert Ferrigno's brilliant "Heartbreaker," dark, edgy.

Mr. Riordan is very successful in jumping tenses, and you get a good feel for the other characters. I am unfamiliar with San Antonio so I felt, like GM Ford in Seattle, he was able to use the city like a character as well.

You know the plot. Beautiful but extremely credible cop falls in love and marries criminal. She rotates her shift ... Read More:

Tres Navarre has decided to remain in San Antonio and has been serving an apprenticeship. With only a few supervised hours left to work before he qualifies for his own PI license, Tres becomes obsessed with what started out as a simple case of some missing demo tapes, when a country musician is killed in front of him. Tres begins investigating, endangering his career and his own life.

Once again Rick Riordan takes the reader on a spin through San Antonio, this time via Austin and the Texas music scene. ... Read More:

I'm a big fan of Rick Riordan and his San Antonio PI Tres Navarre. I've enjoyed Riordan's previous novels, including the non-Tres Cold Springs, and am ready to declare he's the one novelist whose next work I'm always anxiously awaiting. After reading Southtown, I think I have to say my single favorite sentence in the entire work is the one at the end of the About the Author section: Rick Riordan "lives in San Antonio ... where he is at work on the next novel in the Tres Navarre series."

I'm looking ... Read More:
