| When my sibling and I were children more than once our mother read this book aloud to us. Chapters were doled out carefully and we each had our favorite. Mutt's determination to level the playing field by fence walking like the neighborhood cats, was my favorite.

| The story is timeless, and this particular book has great illustrations to go with the old nursery rhyme. My granddaughter is three and a half, and insists on hearing the story and looking at the book every night now. I'm pretty sure she almost has it memorized! I'm very pleased with this purchase. |

| I remembered this fairy tale from my own childhood but was first introduced to this version by Paul Galdone when I found this book (and read it to my son) at my father-in-law's house. My son loves this book so much that every time we're at a playground with a bridge or tunnel he wants to play 'troll and billy goats'. | Sword in the Tree is a great way to introduce kids to the Middle Ages. Young readers can read the book on their own because the vocabulary and sentence structure are simple. The book is in no way dumbed down, however. This was a difficult and danger time, and the subject matter reflects the era. Highly recommended reading for elementary age kids (my 5yo daughter LOVED it). Also recommended for older children: Otto of the Silver Hand by Howard Pyle. |
