This book is superb. If it is a bit short, it is because (unlike the European princesses) almost nothing has been recorded about Nzingha's early life as a child, not the least reason because (as a girl) she was expected to accomplish little more than bearing her husband children. Contrast what she accomplishes as an unlikely tribal leader against the European princesses groomed to become queens and you see that this book, of all the Royal Diaries, is the one most poignantly depicting a woman's success ... There is a common saying which suggests that some friendships are for a lifetime while others are for just a season. In A FRIENDSHIP FOR TODAY, author Patricia McKissack shares the story of Rosemary, an African-American girl, and Grace who is white. The story is set in 1954 just after the Supreme Court has made the desegregating of schools a requirement. As the book opens, Rosemary and her best friend J.J., whom she can proudly beat in a race despite the fact he is a boy, are concluding their last day of school. It is ... Read More:

I bought this book for my two daughters, age 5 and 7. The book tells the story of a young, poor family and a meager Christmas. The book offers plenty of starting points for discussions of important life morals: money doesn't buy happiness, the value of sharing, the importance of family, the spirit of generosity, and more. And at the same time, the story is engaging for young readers. My seven year old read it as soon as it came, and was eager to re-read it with me and her 5 year old sister. This book has fast become a holiday favorite ... Read More:

I've always taught my kids the importance of being truthful but then it's difficult to teach when it's ok to shade the truth. This story teaches the difference perfectly in a very wonderful way. A must for every grade school home library.

An effort by these two terrific professionals is bound to have many good qualities. This won a Caldecott honor designation, and rightly so. Pinkney's watercolors are intricate, absorbing, a real pleasure. The multicolored dresses of girls at a dance are especially pretty. I notice he uses two motifs in his books, chickens and quilts. Both are included here.

This book begins with an author's note on the history of the cakewalk in African American culture. The story is based on a photograph of McKissack's grandparents, who won a cakewalk in 1906 before ... Read More:

Synopsis: This is the story of a young girl venturing out on her own for the first time. This experience would lead to anxiety, excitement, and also trouble for most children. However this story has an added element to it. The main character, `Tricia Ann, is an African-American girl living in the south during the era of segregation. From the beginning of her journey, she encounters the Jim Crow laws of that time. Through everything, `Tricia Ann tries to keep from crying. She meets her friends along the way and they all remind her that she is somebody and to ... Read More:

This is an awesome book. I had purchased this book many years ago at a homeschool curriculum fair because I have a friend who is from Ghana. I did not know, at the time, that medieval Ghana is not the same as present day Ghana.

I student taught 7th grade social studies and science this past fall semester and I relied on this book quite a bit to teach the origins of sub-Saharan trading. The few textbooks we had in class gave very little detail about this critical time in Africa's history and I wanted to expand the students' knowledge about Africa's trading ... Read More:

"Color Me Dark" is one of the most compelling books in the Dear America series. It centers around protagonist Nellie Lee Love, an 11-year-old African American girl living in a town in Tennessee at the end of WW I. This is the era of segregation and when one of Nellie's uncles dies under questionable circumstances [a victim of hate crime], Nellie's dad decides to move the family north to Chicago where they hope to forge a more peaceful life. But, prejudice still exists as Nellie discovers, and this time within the African American community - the more affluent in the society look down ... Read More:
