I gave this boxed set to an avid mystery/suspense reader for Christmas and all she has done is talk about it for days. The packaging is terrific and although I have never read any of the novels my friend is just loving it -- so much so she just had me order the DVD of The Talented Mr. Ripley for her husband for Christmas.

I read all of Patricia Highsmith's Ripley novels and her first was the best of the bunch.
The movie script was written by Anthony Minghella who, employing "literary license" did a great rewrite job.
I would recommend reading the novel first and then watching the movie. It becomes clear that Minghella's development of Ripley's character was stronger than Highsmith's. This doesn't diminish the novel, it enhances it in my opinion.

The Fiction Writer should put tension on every page of a novel, in every scene, and select every word to forward that tension. Patricia Highsmith's debut novel, Strangers on a Train, could be a textbook to these principles. From the first line, "The train tore along with an angry irregular rhythm." she keeps the reader off balance and anticipating with dread every new scene. It's fantastic.

On a train, Guy Haines sits next to Charles Anthony Bruno. Bruno forcefully intrudes on architect ... Read More:

Unlike Terry Castle of "The New Republic", I'm not convinced that Nabokov used Carol and Therese's trip in "The Price of Salt" as a template for the extended "vacation" that Humbert Humbert and Dolores Haze took in "Lolita". If he did, he expanded it in richness and depth about a thousand-fold. "The Price of Salt", while no "Lolita", is an interesting (and unusual) work in its own right. Carol and Therese meet in the toy section of the department store where the latter works; they embark on a friendship, and ... Read More:

Of the five novels in Highsmith's Ripley series, written between 1955 and 1991, only the first, The Talented Mr. Ripley, counts as literature. The others are fun page-turners of no consequence, and the reason is Tom Ripley himself.

In the first book we meet an orphaned nothing who dreams of rising above his poor squalor. We read him from the inside, a modern Raskolnikov whom Highsmith profiles with subtle, sympathetic acuity. The father of a rich, handsome boy Tom met exactly once pays Tom to go to ... Read More:

The Library of America has several interesting compilations of Noir novels. I had read Himes' Real Cool Killers separately and also have just watched his "Cotton Comes to Harlem" from the novel, with the same lead detectives. Himes is almost a forgotten author, typical of the bigotry of the Jim Crow era, in that he wasn't appreciated in the US, but received major prizes in France, where he lived out his life.

The Killer Inside Me is about a despicable deputy in a small TX town, a character one detests ... Read More:

Patricia Highsmith's crime thriller "Ripley Under Ground," was initially published in 1970. It's second in her Ripley series, known to the faithful as the Ripliad, recounting the deeds of her widely-known antihero, the American Tom Ripley, a smooth, charming, murderous, potentially bi-sexual, young psychopath, semi-retired to a lovely French villa -- with an equally lovely young French wife -- off the proceeds of his many bad deeds.

As the book opens, Ripley has been profiting quite nicely thank you, for donkey's ... Read More:

I found this book enjoyable to read, but not very useful as a practical guide. Written almost like an interview, Highsmith details the writing of her various books and short stories. If you're a fan of hers (as I am), these stories are entertaining since they show the genesis of her ideas and insights into her writing.

However, it is difficult to see how many of her suggestions could be applied outside of the situation where she used them. It was almost as if she provided great anecdotes, but couldn't render general principles that ... Read More:

"The Boy Who Followed Ripley," first published in 1980 by Patricia Highsmith, is fourth in her esteemed five-book Ripley saga, known to its enthusiasts as the Ripliad. Like the others, it's about her anti-hero Tom Ripley, con-man, forger, murderer, moderately-loving husband of a beautiful French heiress, and owner of a pleasant French estate. He's a character whom the larger audience only now has first discovered in Anthony Minghella's recent film, "The Talented Mr. Ripley," that starred Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow. I first read the ... Read More:

"Ripley Under Water," a crime thriller by Patricia Highsmith, was initially published in 1992. It's fifth and last in her renowned Ripley series, known to fans as the Ripliad that took her more than four decades to write. It continues to recount the deeds of her infamous antihero, the American Tom Ripley, a smooth, charming, murderous psychopath, semi-retired to a lovely French villa -- with an equally lovely French wife -- off the proceeds of his many bad deeds. Mind you, you don't necessarily need to read the books in order, but there's some advantage to doing ... Read More:
