Books : Weather (First Discovery Books)
These books were originally written for a French audience, and so unless your climate matches that of France, the statements about the weather that accompanies each season will be inaccurate! "Spring is the season of mild, showery weather"...summer is a time of brief thunderstorms...beaches aren't cloudy for long...autumn is "cool" and "damp"...and it snows in the winter. In addition, like virtually all the books in this series, it contains factual errors--"no two snowflakes are alike." That's ... Read More:

Books : Colors (A First Discovery Book)
This is the best book I've ever found to teach children about not just colors, but how they are made, shading, and how color affects perception. My preschooler loves this book, and we all love reading it to her. A great gift for the budding artist, too.

3.The Egg (First Discovery Books) by: Gallimard Jeunesse, Pascale De Bourgoing

Books : The Egg (First Discovery Books)
A parent brought this book into my classroom and I thought it was an AMAZING book. We hatched chicken eggs in our classroom and this book gave a wonderful explanation of how chicks develop inside the egg. It also shows where the egg forms inside the chicken. The visuals are very realistic and engaging for children. The book shows other animals that lay eggs-including lice! Too bad it's out of print.

Books : Fruit (First Discovery Books)
This is our first taste of the "First Discovery Book" collection. FRUIT is her favorite book! We read it at least 10 times a day! The age group for this book is actually 4-and up but Hope Elizabeth is nearly 2 and she can't get enough of the clear pages that reveal the inside of the delicious fruit. Get this amazing book and watch your child eat up the pages!

I purchased this book used a number of years ago and was very disappointed to see that they had incorrect information regarding the phases of the moon. I called the publisher to mention it to them and I received a polite, "Thanks for letting us know." I don't think they took me seriously. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this book! If you want your children to learn factual information this is not the book for you. The incorrect information is this: "As the moon moves around the earth, our planet blocks the sunlight from ... Books : Airplanes and Flying Machines (First Discovery Book)
My 30-month-old loves this book. It is colorful, durable and covers a wide range of airplane topics. We especially love the cut-away scenes showing the cockpit of a jet, with controls, dials and lights. Its wire-ring binding is a very nice touch; the pages turn very easily and resist tearing. Its a great choice for your juvenile library. We will be investigating others in the series.

7.The Ladybug and Other Insects (A First Discovery Book) by: Pascale de Bourgoing, Gallimard Jeunesse

Books : The Ladybug and Other Insects (A First Discovery Book)
This series is an imitation of the Eyewitness format for younger readers. I'd recommend it primarily to preschoolers.

Most of these books range from mediocre to horrible, but this is a delightful exception! Small children learn about the anatomy, diet, and lifecycle of ladybugs in clear, concise text. There is a moment of oversimplicifaction--when the book implies that all ladybugs eat only aphids--but other than this quibble, it is excellent. There are no translation problems with this one, ... .

The << Seashore>> is an essential member of the First Discovery series and deserves to be put back in print. There is no doubt many people (and libraries) would like to have a complete set of these titles.

These First Discovery books never cease to amaze. They pioneer the innovative technique of the "double sided overlay", a brilliant illustrating tool which brings excitement and almost dynamic movement to story telling.

The concept of the Seashore book is to emphasise the interface ... Read More:

This series is a rip-off of the Eyewitness format for younger readers. It is most appropriate for ages 2-5.

This book suffers from its French origins. Hedgehogs don't mean much to American children, and the desert has camels in it, etc.

It also doesn't stay focused. It strays off into bees, snails, ducks, herons, and butterflies, accidentally implying that they live or their eggs live in the ground.

This book, like most in the series, isn't coherent, focused, or logical. It has ... Read More:

This book is an excellent tool for explaining your 3-6-year-old how clouds are formed, where snow comes from, and everything else related to water. Pictures are colorful and realistic, and transparent insert make the pages come alive. A must in every curious child's library!
