| This was simply a good read for youth or perhaps for anyone. The story sent out a message concerning discrimination, learning and coping with change, and growing and evolving into a stronger human being. Thumbs up ! |

| Naomi and her little brother live with their grandmother. When their mother drifts back into their lives with a very unpleasant boyfriend, the children avoid her by visiting relatives in Mexico. Once there, they search for Naomi's father, hoping that he will sign custody over to Naomi's grandmother. Meeting her family helps Naomi learn more about why she is the way she is and to learn to celebrate her rich heritage.

| My husband and I took turns reading it to our kids, age 6 and 8. We all enjoyed the story. The writing is quite nice, and the vocabularly is just right for an 8-year old, and OK for a 6-year old. There are quite a few "big" words that are good to explain to kids, but not so many that they can't understand the compelling story. I recommend it! |

| I purchased this book for my 8 month old daughter 1.5 years ago. The combination of the amazingly real and vividly colorful illustrations and the descriptive text makes for such a great read! My daughter, now 2, loves this book and insists that we read it to her nightly; it never gets old! |

Ugly, in the respect of disrespect for true talent unrewarded in an age of ugliness in America. The rich skin-toned shades of brown, borderline mono-chromatic "makes" the book! | I read this book to my class of 1st grade students, many of whom are bilingual (Spanish/English). They really enjoyed this story upon first reading and re-reading. The plot and drawings allow the students to make predictions about what is going to happen next - thus allowing them to interact with the book in a dynamic way. The scattering of Spanish words and Latino/a culture helped to encourage the interest of my student - both those who are Latino/a, and those who are not.
