This book was great for a few reasons... Theme - a utopian society will always be relevant and always be thought provoking. Especially when its well written like The Giver is. I find the theme to be incredibly interesting, especially since I have only ever read one other similar novel which was 1984. Size and syle - It was short, very easy to read and follow. | Every few years I read this book over and love it every time. It is a great book to introduce kids to the plight of the Jews and non-Jews of German-occupied countries during WWII. My 10 year old read it and loved it too and it brought up a lot of questions. Highly recommended. |

| Read this enjoyable little book this summer and knew I had to share it with my middle school class. We have enough time to read a couple of chapters every few days during our "silent" reading time and I love Lowry's tongue-in-cheek delivery. The vocabulary is great too and I branched out to show them more of the "old fashioned" stories the Willoughby's are obsessed with. Does my heart good when I see kids pick up Heidi or Pollyanna. |

| I was hestitant to listen to this story as it was obviously a teen book and I really didn't know how I would feel. I work from home and the day just flew while I was listening. I finished the audio in 1 day. What an enthralling, incredible, thought provoking concept. Wow!. I ordered 4 more copies to give away as gifts.
One of the best stories I have listened to. Don't miss it. |

| Lois Lowry has really saved the day in this house more than once with her great Gooney Bird books. In this book, the first of the Gooney Bird series, Gooney Bird is introduced to her new class. She's confident and smart and has a good time in life and the class does an effective job of welcoming their new member. | Lois Lowry provides a little look into a fantasy world. No special powers, luckily, but it is an imaginary land with imaginary people. They could exist though, people could be like that... As the book opens our special girl is somewhat even luck to be alive.. Usually when a child is born with a disfigurement they are sent out to die, but Kira, now a teenager was luckily spared. | I read The Giver when I was a lot younger and it left such an impression on me that I decided, at the age of 26, to venture into the young adult section to buy it. I was thrilled to find out that there were two sequels to the novel and quickly got Gathering Blue and Messenger. I loved Gathering Blue, but Messenger left me somehow wanting more.
