Books : Sylvester and the Magic Pebble
I'm not quite sure what's behind the criticism from other reviewers of this book; it's fairly innocuous compared to some of the Disney animated features in which the parents of cute animal characters are violently murdered. My granddaughters both love to pick up "pretty rocks" and will bring home pounds of them when we walk in the woods. I bought this book for them--but read it first, because of what other reviewers had said. I loved it--and the girls will, too, I'm sure, as it ends happily. ... Read More:

When my children were young, Swimmy was one of the books we often read together. Our daughter,Kathryn, now 24, graduated from the University of Chicago with her Masters in Social work, emphasizing in Community Organization. I wanted the young kids coming to her graduation party to have an idea about what Kathryn had studied, and Swimmy offered a perfect example of a group of individuals working together to change their outcome for the better. Leo Lionni's story discusses community relationships, the ... Read More:

Honestly, I can't think of a way to describe this book without just typing the entire story into this review.

But it is very memorable, and I certainly loved it as a child. Leo Lionni is the classic children's author whose name you never remember but whose books you most definitely read as a kid. Don't pass this one by without at least checking it out.

My daughter brought this home from school.

It's a cute little story about an inch worm who gets out of being eaten by offering to measure stuff for the birds. He measures tails, a bill, a neck, legs, and even a hummingbird.

It works until a nightingale asks to have his song measured. What to do?

The art work is good and my daughter did look it over.

At first she was so-so to the story as she didn't understand how the inchworm measured. I showed her with my finger and ... Read More:

As a child this was among my favorite reads. Not only is it a heartwarming and inspiring tale, but it is just downright hilarious. Barbara Park is an unmatched talent amongst children writers. As a young adult I am still able to enjoy this book, and that's a real good sign.

God bless Barbara Park. I recommend all of her other books as well, but you should probably start here.
