| My son uses it in 8th grade, and being a historian myself I checked the book out. The foreign policy part would have needed an editor with background knowledge. Especially galling was p. 754 in which the Stalinist regime in the Soviet Union gets dispatched in 3 (!) sentences, (while Hitler gets several pages) two of the three saying that "Stalin executed his rivals, ordered the deaths of thousands suspected of supporting his rivals, and sent millions of Russians to labor camps. | BEWARE this is far from a scholarly biography.
This is far from what I had expected. I expected a biography of a brilliant man but got an unapologetic evangelical polemic aimed at an elementary school student level. Monsieur Pascal would be rolling in dismay in his grave. It plays (to say the least) VERY fast and loose with the facts, at least as far as I can ascertain them from other sources. This is a pleasant change from some of the very technical and detailed history books we read. Although it is an easy read, it quite adequately gives a summary of Calvin's life and well expresses many of his beliefs. |
