1.Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by: Annie Dillard
1993-09
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Pilgrim at Tinker Creek
Childrens Bookshop Price: $49.95

Used Price: $31.47

This was the first book of Nature Writing I had ever read as a freshman in college. It is now one of my favorites. I love Dillard's intricacies, scientific observations, detail and metaphysical tangents that weave their way about the book like so many spiderwebs. I've read most of her other nonfiction which keeps in the same tone and wonder.

2.The Awakening by: Kate Chopin
1994-12

Used Price: $1.65

The Awakening is a novella about a young married woman in New Orleans during the late 1800s who suddenly develops a taste for freedom - to make her own decisions and live with the consequences. An exciting concept only because of the setting. The storyline is really very mild for today's readers.

The only thing that makes this underdeveloped novella worth reading today is knowing what era the author was from and the impact it made with her peers when this story was released. Were it published today ... Read More:

3.Johnny Tremain by: Esther Forbes
2002-08
Average Rating: out of 5 stars
>>More Details
Books : Johnny Tremain
This novel is severely underappreciated because of its standing as a "kid's book." I first read Johnny Tremain more than a decade ago in elementary school, and I've read it at least once a year, every year, since.

If there is one complaint that I do not understand when reading negative reviews, it is the claim that these characters are 'flat'. They are anything but. I'd even venture to say that Johnny is one of the most well-written characters in literature. Forbes writes Johnny so that he grows and matures ... Read More:

4.The Custom of the Country by: Edith Wharton
1995-05
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Custom of the Country
Childrens Bookshop Price: $69.95

Used Price: $57.46

Edith Wharton is still one of America's most well-known female novelists and writers. She creates Undine Spragg who aspires to adapt and adjust into New York City high society which is a recurring theme in Wharton's books like Age of Innocence or House of Mirth. Unlike House of Mirth, Undine is more comical, flawed and a challenge to any actress. This book should be made into a film if it hasn't already. I don't know why we have so much junk out there. Undine is not only comical but she is scheming to break into high society regardless ... Read More:

5.Chronicles of Avonlea by: L. M. Montgomery

Books : Chronicles of Avonlea
Childrens Bookshop Price: $39.95

Used Price: $17.63

If you're already an 'Anne of Green Gables' fan, you'll love these short stories. Each one is unique and is about different residents of Avonlea and its' surrounds. Laugh out loud with some - they're every bit as entertaining as the 'Anne' books themselves.

Don't expect to find too much of 'Anne' herself in these stories though. She often gets a mention, but no more than that. These stories are about other residents in Avonlea and are great for giving extra depth and fullness to the novels about Anne. 12 tales in total - I loved ... Read More:

6.Rainbow Valley (Anne of Green Gables Novels) by: L. M. Montgomery
1995-12
Average Rating: out of 5 stars
>>More Details
Books : Rainbow Valley (Anne of Green Gables Novels)
Childrens Bookshop Price: $44.95

Used Price: $26.81

This novel is one of the best of the "Anne" series. The plot moves, the characters are well portrayed, and romance keeps the suspense up and the reader engrossed. It is so wonderful to read something written about the turn of the century that isn't full of the filth of so much of today's fiction.

7.Night Train to Memphis by: Elizabeth Peters
1996-12

This is the best of the Vicky Bliss series. The romance between Vicky and John is so perfect...plus, this book really explores their relationship (as well as Egyptology and stolen antiquities).

8.Devil-May-Care by: Elizabeth Peters
2001-04
Average Rating: out of 5 stars
>>More Details
Books : Devil-May-Care
I first read this book when it was published. I have lost count of the number of times I have read it since then. This was among the first books to go to my Kindle. I love all of Elizabeth Peters' books, but for sheer lunacy, this one remains my favorite.

9.Summer of the Dragon by: Elizabeth Peters
1998-08
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : Summer of the Dragon
Childrens Bookshop Price: $44.95

Used Price: $24.99

I really don't know how I managed to skip this book, but somehow I didn't get my hands on this until a few weeks ago when I saw it at a used bookstore. Of course, being an avid Peters fan, I immediately picked it up and devoured it in just one sitting. This is a delightful tale of an anthropology student who takes a summer job with an eccentric millionaire and, in the process, unravels the mystery of his disappearance. Oh, and she also meets the man of her dreams. Like the rest of Peters' novels, this book has intrigue, romance, and plenty of history for the history ... Read More:

10.Summer by: Edith Wharton
2000-07
Average Rating: out of 5 stars
>>More Details
Books : Summer
Edith Wharton's 2nd novel set in New England was written during
World War 1 from her expatriate's home in Paris in 1916. Her style does not reflect sentimental reminiscence for gentle hills and bountiful earth, for she continues her evocation of the starkness of social existence, set against the desolation of the heartless landscape of New England, which she began in ETHAN FROME. While the former story is related by an objective narrator during a prolonged winter sojourn, SUMMER in contrast is presented by the omniscient narrator--opening
in June, culminating on ... Read More:
