| In an effort to work my way through Newbury winner/honor books, I picked up the Wednesday Wars - and what a treat this turned out to be!
Holling Hoodhood reminded me of a combination of Holden Caulfield, Scout Finch, and Anne Shirley. There were times when I laughed out loud, and other times when I felt tears running down my face. | Mr. Schmidt writes beautiful books, and while some themes seem to trickle through all the books, all of his books are hugely different. The ability of an author to be that versatile and sensitive and creative is impressive. There are a lot of things to like about this book and some great things to discuss, with say a class or a youth reading group.

| I'm a little surprised at the recommended age for this book. Perhaps they are thinking of children reading it for themselves. Parents and teachers enjoy reading these poems to children and talking about their own experiences. The book is a wonderful tool for helping preschoolers learn to love books as they relate the poet's imagery to their own experiences. |

| I chose this book to round out a study of the early colonies for my 4th and 6th grade boys. I would say it is geared more for 7th grade and up. But since I read it to them I could explain some of the things that they did not understand right off. I was extremely pleased with how Mr. Schmidt rendered Brandford's, "Of Plymouth Plantation" into a useable and understandable text for today's reader.

Winter (the book) allows me to revel in Winter (the season). I like how the many different writers bring varying aspects to the topic creating a depth most books lack. | In principle I am oppose dot a book like this. It takes some of teh key Old Testament stories and imaginatively looks at them from a different angle. The last thing a small child needs is to be confused about what the inspired Word reports. So this book needs to be read to kids with care. Make sure they know this is fiction not Scripture.
