Though I am skeptical about most 'history,' this book was written by a man who felt oppression and fought it. This book as well Douglass' other writing should be the primary source on slavery and the civil war.

This book, as well as its excellent forward, serves to warn that slavery could happen here again disguised as something else. It reminds us that slavery is not an institution but a crime.

This edition is the best as far as size and print quality. It has also best ... Read More:

The biography of a man born to slavery, that self-taught how to read and write, learned a trade, survived maltreatment, slavery, poverty, degradation, escaped from the southern states and fought for the freedom of Black Americans. The life of someone to look up, someone who came from the bottom and reached a high level in society. This is a book that speaks about struggling, that shows how to develop self-respect, and strong will to improve one self and change the society that abused, underserved, discrimanated ... Books : Uncle Tom's Cabin and Frederick Douglass: Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (Everyman's Library (Paper))
Even though the characters in Uncle Tom's Cabin are "fictional", the story is realistic about American slavery during the life of Harriet Beecher Stowe. Uncle Tom's Cabin met a great deal of resistance in the south, because it exposed the skeleton in America's closet. Abraham Lincoln said to the Stowe...."so you're the little lady who started the great war". Stowe is not an impressive novelist; her writing lacks literary style. But that doesn't matter. Stowe is recognized for her courage to confront the world ... Read More:

This is one of the most violent books (an autobiography!) I ever read. It illustrates horrifyingly `that crime of crimes: making man the property of his fellow man.' It shows the horrendous `playing' field of blood and blasphemy, of flogging and callous skins, of hunger and nakedness, and even premeditated murder. `It was a common saying that it was worth a half-cent to kill a n.gger, and a half-cent to bury one.'

system: mental darkness, hypocritical religion
Forcing them to live in appalling living conditions ... Read More:

In the classic slave narrative genre, Frederick Douglass' narrative of his life brings to life, in all its horrors, American slave society, and one slave's life-long protest against it.

When we read Frederick Douglass in his own words, he is less the radical and more the reformer than we've been led to believe. He is also more the Christian statesmen and less the Christianity critic than we might imagine. Douglass' oft quoted comments about Christianity had much more to do with a righteous critique of distorted Christian living ... Read More:

Two reasons might put one off from reading Frederick Douglass's autobiographies: (1)Douglass's life was so admirable and heroic that they are likely to contain more virtue than interest; and (2) there are so doggone many of them (after all, "autobiographies" ?! three of them?!). Don't let this happen. First, Douglass is a very good writer -- he's funny, he's earthy, he's smart, and his attitudes are surprisingly contemporary. It's almost as if your Democratic neighbor (although Douglass was a stalwart Republican -- those were the days) were ... Read More:

These two books are sometimes very hard going, but essential reading for Americans. We probably tend to think about slavery very much in the abstract, when we even think about it, but these narratives make it painfully palpable and very human. In a way complementary to Akhil Reed Amar's brilliant description of the way slavery thoroughly corrupted the American political system (in his America's Constitution), these books reveal in detail the thoroughgoing and extraordinary moral perversion slaveholding caused in individual lives - to some extent ... I have rarely experienced a narrative that has the reader in the time period. The introduction by Robert O'Meally is a must read, because he gives you insight into the sematics. I felt great shame for America and the religious community after reading the story of Frederick Douglass. People rarely disclose the raw horror of history, but you will find this book does not hold back reality. Frederick Douglass is a great American hero and everyone should read this book.
