Welcome to the world of the heyday of jazz. The year is 1936, and the world is open to a young orphan who has happened to find himself on the run.

Curtis writes with zesty personality for Bud and paints a portrait of a very likeable young boy who simply wants what all of us want: a family. He's a great kid with plenty of sass who is ready to take on the world and do what he needs to do to find himself his biological father.

Curtis does an excellent job of painting the culture, ... Read More:

SO much better than I expected! The dialogue flowed very well and the characters were all highly realistic. There were some nitpicky things I disliked, though. I think the title was misleading, since they didn't actually go to Birmingham until very late in the story, and to me, it's not the biggest part of the story. (Maybe it should have just been titled 'The Watsons'? Their familial bonds are what the story is about to me.) Another thing that bothered me was the first page, too many similes and metaphors. ... I wanted to make this high level book available to my fifth graders who are studying the Civil War, but was concerned about the dialect being difficult for some of them to read. I purchased books for each student and then purchased the CD so they could follow along as the professionally recorded CD played enabling them to understand the "foreign" words. They love being able to see the printed word as well as hear the intent of the author. They are able to flag parts of the book as they "read" along. It is making this book ... Read More:

"Mr. Chickee's Funny Money" was very slow in the beginning. However once the story started moving, it was fun to read. Actually, I had bought this book for my granddaughter, but after I reading it, I decided it was a good book for a boy.

Although I was intrigued by this story--flipping pages quickly to find out how the protagonist would buck the Sarge--I was ultimately disappointed. "The Sarge" is a cruel slum lord without a shred of good in her, and the protagonist is the Sarge's 9th grade son without a shred of bad in him.

I'm disappointed in this book because even if I overlook Luther's ability to be so well-adjusted despite his upbringing (after all, Harry Potter did it), and even if I overlook the contrived ending (at least it's not happily ever after), ... Read More:

Christopher Paul Curtis's fast-paced sequel to MR. CHICKEE'S FUNNY MONEY, Mr. Chickee's Messy Mission needs no prior familiarity to prove a fun adventure, and stands well alone for any elementary-level collection catering to grades 3-5. Here Steve, Russell and Richelle are in a different universe with Mr. Chickee when their dog Rodney Rodent vanishes and they try to find him before the Oops-a-Daisy clock hits zero. Zany characters and events pack a fun leisure read.

When I ordered this book I didn't realize it would be so hard to read. I had always heard about this book but never read it, I still haven't. It has too much slang and half words in it. For as well known as it is I don't know how anybody read it. The story behind it is probably a very good story, but I couldn't understand enough of it to read more than the first chapter then it was placed on the book shelf. And I now know why it looks new and was sold as used, the fist purchaser probably couldn't read it either.
