Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - WARNING! - QuickBooks is Adware
Unless you like reading pop up ads, don't buy this software. QuickBooks Pro forces you to suffer through a constant barrage of pop up ads for addtional services, products and upgrades. I just spoke to customer service and they told me there is no way to disable this feature. I can understand being forced to read ads for free software, but I am stunned that I am forced to read ads in a piece of software that I paid for. The next time I am forced to upgrade (QuickBooks stops supporting older versions of their software after just a few years) I'll just switch to one of their competitors.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Upgrade WARNING
I was forced to upgrade by Intiut's payroll service from QB2005 to QB2008. If you are upgrading from QB2005 or before you MUST read the following: This is a MAJOR upgrade with a change in your company file format. Before you upgrade you must backup your company file to floppy, second hard drives, CD, DVD, anywhere and everywhere you can. Please reread the previous sentence. After the install finishes it asks you if you will let it move your company file to a new QB directory. YOU MUST WRITE DOWN THE LOCATION OF THIS NEW DIRECTORY ON A PIECE OF PAPER because in the install step coming up QB2008 forgets where it put it. Preferably you will have QB2008 find and load this moved file rather than loading one of your multiple backups because your backup has a different file suffix. FWIW: My Windows Internet Explorer (XP Home-SP2) oddly found the moved file but didn't tell me the files' correct directory path. Really. I finally located the moved company file in a shared documents area which is not where Internet Explorer said it was. In loading this file for the first time QB2008 will convert the file to the new QB2008 format.

When I went to register my QB2008 the online registration failed because it claimed my IE wouldn't allow cookies which isn't true. Hmmm. What is Intuit up to with this? To register I had to talk to someone in India who was hard to hear and understand.

It seems that every few years QuickBooks changes their company file format and almost forces you to upgrade. BTW: The install program adds some advertising icons to your desktop. No problem. Just right click them and delete them.

The program menu in QB2008 looks completely different than QB2005. Looks like I'll be spending some time re-learning.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Complicated
I'm software and hardware proficient, but this software is COMPLICATED if you don't have some accounting or bookeeping background. My partner and I both were lost every time we opened it up. We finally gave up.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - The worst software product that I have ever used
I have never reviewed a piece of software before. But Quickbooks 2008 may be the most poorly tested software ever released, (including Vista). I feel compelled to warn others away from this mess.

We made the mistake of upgrading to QuickBooks 2008 last week because Intuit stopped providing online banking support for our old version. Within one day we were reinstalling and restoring from backups almost constantly.

We have finally installed what appears to a stable copy on an old XP laptop.

This product should still be considered Beta. Avoid upgrading at all costs. Actually, we will be advoiding Intuit going forward.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Problematic , SLOW and not very well backward compatible
QuickBooks Pro 2008 is of course a re-hash of previous versions with some tweaks to the user interface with little improvement.
The program generates endless errors in the Windows XP event log that according to Intuit should not be there but should be in the Intuit log. Of course there is no fix for this ... , so expect your event log to fill up with QB errors quickly -- - I guess that's what "Quick" about the product.
Forget support, as always the info regarding issues is next to impossible to find in the Intuit knowledge base and real person to person support costs hard cash. The best support I found was in the users forum, but not well organized and most questions submitted were never responded to by Intuit staff. The Intuit knowledge base is more of a perpetual loop from not applicable to not applicable information. Sort of Microsoft like.
Overall , the product is quite slow on an AMD Athlon XP 64 X2 4800 system with gigs of memory. Standard QuickBooks functions are counter intuitive and require considerable digging around the nebulous interface to accomplish simple tasks.
Be careful if you want to use accountants copy for your accountant. He/she must have the "Premier" edition 2008. Additionally accountant copies from or to previous editions is only a wish. Read all of the hard to extremely hard to find info about what you can do with the product, Tax Table service and migrating data. Another burn from Intuit is that if you have corrupted data be ready to shell out $750 if you want your database back in a reasonable amount of time. If you can wait a few weeks then it will only cost you $250. Intuit has made sure you cannot repair your own data when you have corruption in the database beyond what QuickBooks can repair on your workstation with the "Rebuild" and "Verify" data functions. You can not extract the data tables and indexes to start a new
company file and rebuild your database. The QuickBooks database is highly is prone to errors - be warned.
The cost of the product is quite high considering the product has had little incremental improvement year to year.
These issues with the product are of course my fault and your fault for continuing to use a mid-90's product re-hashed with little improvement and pay good money for it. At best, QuickBooks Pro 2008 or any of the many preceding incarnations are worth perhaps 20 cents on the dollar for what we pay. We should stop using the product.
