I've held off on buying a scanner that would also scan film and slides for several years because the pricing was too high and the performance slow. After reading the previous buyers reviews I decided to take the plunge, and I can say it was worth the wait!
This scanner is relatively quick and very painless to use. It also has lots of corrective features to enhance old and dusty slides, film, etc. I inherited several boxes of my Dad's old slides from the 50's onward and I'm now in the process of scanning in and retouching them. I'd say on a good night of about two hours I'll scan in and retouch about 20 slides. I'm pretty much a novice at this, so I'm sure there's a faster way, but I'm impressed with the results and sure you will be, too.

I put this scanner, an HP scanner, and an Epson scanner in my cart as I researched all three. I had decided it would be either the Canon or Epson, when suddenly this Canon dropped to $101 on Amazon (and free shipping). I took the $75 drop in price as an good omen, so I ordered it at that low price, and the next day it was back up to $176! It is well made, and makes wonderfull scans of my color prints. I did notice some white dust and lint showing on my scans, and a close look at the glass with a flashlight showed dust on the glass. I cleaned it with some distilled water on a lint-free cloth, and it works great. The "glass" is actually optical grade plastic and should NOT be cleaned with glass cleaner as the ammonia may damage it. I searched "cleaning scanner glass" for the cleaning instructions as Canon does not mention cleaning. I really got this scanner for scanning 120 film negatives as I have just returned to this style of photography, though I haven't been able to get any film developed yet to try it. In the end, I found that of the scanners I had in my cart, only this one includes film holders for 120 film, as well as 35mm slides and 35mm negatives. Loading the driver and using the scanner are a breeze on my XP computer, and it includes Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 (Mac) and 5.0 (XP/Vista).

I've worn out two flatbed scanners and one parallel port slide scanner over the years. My sister had purchased the Canon CanoScan 8800F recently and loved it so I took her word and ordered one. It's is the BEST I could have hoped for. The 150 dpi setting is FAST! The 300 dpi setting is very fast compared to my scanners in the past. The 600 dpi does bog down but I really don't need my routine family photos scanned in this high of a resolution. So I stick to the 300 dpi pretty much and the scans are excellent quality and color. The software is amazing. In the past when I've laid like 4-6 photos on the glass then I've had to separate each of them by cropping and then save. This software separates the photos for me and I can just zip through saving each one using Ctl-S, putting them all into one folder and then renaming them all using Windows Explore. The slides are slower to scan but much faster than my previous scanner and the software also separates each slide for me. Also, if a photo is washed out or fading, the software has some awesome fixes for all sorts of problems. One B&W that was almost faded out totally was repaired like it had just been developed! All details could be seen. So I just can't praise this scanner enough or the software. I went ahead and purchased the 2-year replacement warranty since I use a scanner a lot but have a feeling this scanner will prove to be hearty! I also found Amazon.com had the best price on the scanner. So I'm happy with my purchase and I'm plowing through the family photos and slides so much faster than in years gone by!

This is the best scanner I have ever owned. The software manual is difficult to use. I still cannot scan B&W negatives with sizes other than 35mm. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat!

This is the first Canon scanner I've owned after 3 HP scanners over several years. I've had it only a few weeks, but am very impressed with its quality, speed and ease of use. With its LED light source, it is immediately ready to scan without a warm-up period. I have scanned some old 35 mm color film with excellent results and expect the same with hundreds of 35 mm slides, which was the primary reason I selected this scanner. Based on the limited usage so far, I am very pleased with the product and enthusiastically recommend it.
