Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - pure bliss
This is Coldplay, so of course it's awesome, but in this album they get back to their humble beginnings. Oddly enough, they remind me of an Australian band on this album, which is an added bonus. Their best work since Rush of Blood to the Head!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Coldplay's ambitious crowning achievment
Following the near disaster that was "X&Y", Coldplay has rebounded with what is possibly the best album of 2008. They return to the melodic, varied sounds of "Rush of Blood To The Head", and, thankfully, use Martin's beautiful falsetto much more sparingly this time around.
Most of the songs have 2 parts, which is daring in itself, but it works on every single one. From the psychedelic trip in the second part of "Yes" to the haunting end of "Death and All His Friends", the style and tone is unmatched (put it on in a car and you'll see how genius the production is, as the album manages to become a full circle).
The pain and melancholy that is evident in Coldplay's writing comes through in the all-string title track, which features brilliant lyrics along with a driving techno beat. Brian Eno was put to good use here.
As a whole, "Viva La Vida" is memorable and extremely cohesive. Whether your tearing up to "Reign of Love" or listening to the surprising hard rock sounds of "Violet Hill", your sure to enjoy this masterpiece and also become thankful that Coldplay has saved themselves with every memorable passing track.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - New Coldplay Listener Lukewarm On This Album
I have to start off by saying this is the first Coldplay CD I have ever bought. I am familiar with their past hits, but their patented brand of Travis-influenced sleepy-time piano balladry never quite did it for me. That's why I was surprised to hear "Violet Hill" and "Viva La Vida" which, in my opinion, sound totally different than anything I have heard them do before. Two great songs, but yet an uneven album which yields a couple more good songs, but that's pretty much it. You get the sense that the band is trying to prove that they can do something different on this record, and it succeeds partly because how great "Volet Hill" and "Viva La Vida" are, but they are definitely the two best songs on the album. However, it doesn't feel permanent or authentic - I feel they will revert back to their original sound on future albums. You also get the sense that this album is trying to be BIG, like U2's "Joshua Tree" or something. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite cut it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Possibly The Album of The Year
Honestly, I thought A Rush Of Blood To The Head was their best stuff, but I'm not even sure anymore. This CD is like no other Coldplay CD before it, and with that said I think that it takes them to a new level.

It contemplates love and death, has an intro and a conclusion, and BEAUTIFULY written songs.

By far one of their best albums to date, blowing away X&Y. Anyone who doesn't realize that needs to actually sit down and listen to the amazingness of Viva La Vida!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Sub-Par Coldplay
Get's better the more you listen. Has new sound with pleasant melody. Nothing will ever touch PARACHUTES!
