LET THEM EAT CAKE is an hilarious comedy series centering around the court of Versailles at the height of Marie Antoinette's reign. Written and designed by Peter Learmouth as a showcase for Dawn French ("The Vicar of Dibley") and Jennifer Saunders ("Absolutely Fabulous"), LET THEM EAT CAKE is crash-course history lesson with a twist.
The Comtesse Colombine de Vache (Jennifer Saunders) lives in the Palace of Versailles and spends her days keeping tabs on the more intriguing misadventures within the palace walls - mostly concerning her arch-rival Madame du Plonge (Alison Steadman). With help from her sneaky maid Lisette (Dawn French) and couturier Bouffant (Adrian Scarborough), the Comtesse gets into one crazy caper after another!
"The Pox" - Desperate to be seduced by the resident palace hunk, the Marquis de Bonvie (Adam Jones), Colombine's plan is stalled when her estranged husband is diagnosed with the pox.
"Murder" - The Marquise de Foufou is discovered in her chambers resembling "steak tartar"...is Colombine responsible?
"The Portrait" - Noted society painter Madame Vigee-Lebrun (Maggie Steed) has been engaged to immortalise Colombine, but can she be pursuaded to pose without her mammoth wigs? Meanwhile, the sadistic Marquis de Sade (Richard E. Grant) has escaped again...
"Making Voopee" - Marie Antoinette (Elizabeth Berrington) introduces Colombine to a traditional Austrian onion salad. Soon after, Colombine exhibits all the visible signs of being pregnant...could it have been King Louis?...
"A Marriage of Convenience" - Colombine's down-and-out sister Cecile (Kathy Burke) comes begging for arms. Meanwhile, Lisette and Bouffant find themselves in a sordid love triangle.
"The Royal Command Performance" - In an effort to boost her popularity, Marie Antoinette organises several events where she and Louis will make love...in public. Naturally anybody of importance will be at the "evening 'do", so Madame du Plonge is outraged that she will only be welcome at the matinee...
This BBC series styles itself after BLACKADDER, but is really a showcase for the sublime talents of French & Saunders, who throw themselves completely into their outlandish characters. The rest of the cast follow suit, especially dear Alison Steadman, who must have relished her role as the man-hungry Madame du Plonge. A real treat.
