There are drugs for both smoking and drinking that make the user sick if he returns to his addictive substance. This seems pointless on some level. After all, would it not be simpler and cheaper to just stop smoking or drinking and forget the drug?

And yet, anyone who has suffered an addiction understands why this could be so useful. One of the most common addictions today is food. However, unlike other addictions, we can't simply quit cold turkey. We need food to live, and so there is a need for balance. Oh, balance... when are people ever balanced about anything!? It is in our nature to teeter between extremes, and that is fully apparent when looking at the dieting industry.

Enter Orlistat. Much like the drugs for smoking or drinking addictions, there are side effects used as a deterrent. However, it is not all or nothing. Rather than setting the bar at zero, a dosage has been selected that will allow roughly 15 grams of fat per meal to be comfortably eaten. Generally speaking, there is no need to worry if you stay within these limits, and that is where the drug shines.

However, we are human. Rather than using it as it was intended, we want to maintain our unhealthy diet and take a pill to lessen the harmful effects. This is not only a bad plan for weight loss, but can lead to heavy side effects. These can range from mildly amusing to extremely embarrassing. To really integrate the drug properly into a diet, it can't be taken in this way, only with meals that are high in fat. Rather, it is meant to be taken 3 times a day and will remain in your system for a while. What this means is that you can't just not take a pill with a fatty meal and "cheat" to avoid having treatment effects.

This pill may not be for you, and if you choose to take it, understand that it is a commitment. If you are already dieting well, it is a bonus boost to your weight loss. Either way, I think it is a valuable tool for those of us with addictions if we keep things in perspective.

Rating: - Helps me with my eating, Worth it
I have been using Alli for over 2 months and have seen great results. Even though I don't always stay under the daily calories its a pill that I take with my meals that makes me want to stay under 19 grams of fat, so is a motivater in a pill. People talk about Treatment Effects. I have had some, but they aren't bad and if you know you ate something bad, just prepare and use more protection ( with your normal undergarments for the possible oil leakage, I know gross but better coming out then staying in). Never had I had any horrible TE's, its been a easy ride and I will continue to take my Alli as it keeps my diet in check.

Can make your muscles sore from straining! Blocks some fat absorption, but hasn't had a significant effect on weight loss.
