Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Ghost Canoe
Ghost Canoe is about a fourteen-year-old boy named Nathan MacAllister. After the ship named the Burnaby sunk, no one thought there were any survivors, though there were footprints, stolen goods, and a murdered captain. Nathan thought otherwise. After a series of events, he realizes that the murderer was actually in the village and that a sole survivor existed. At the end of the book, Kane, the survivor, died because of his greed for a treasure he was pursuing the entire time. I loved this book because it is great historical fiction novel, it is exciting, and it is a mystery.

This book is a historical fiction novel because it describes the history and geography of the Pacific Northwest. It outlines information on the Indian tribes that live near the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It also describes what it was like to live in the unsettled area of Washington state during the late 1800`s. The area was mainly populated by Indians and a few pioneers of that era. The lighthouse on Tatoosh Island, near the strait, is the setting for the story. It was refurbished in 1874 to attract a family to keep the light burning, which is where Nathan's father worked. It still stands today.

This book is very exciting and kept my attention. I wondered if there were any survivors from the shipwreck. After learning a survivor existed, I wondered why he killed the captain and remained in the area. When a letter, from the captain's brother, hinted at a treasure, I realized why the survivor stayed in the village. A man matching Kane's description was mentioned in the letter. Nathan realizes the man is Kane after talking with his dad. Kane is well known shop owner in the village, who is not trusted by the Indians. Kane discovered the treasure and died at the end of the book because he puts his greed before his safety.

I enjoyed Ghost Canoe because there is a mystery within the story. It kept me guessing from the first page until the last. It was full of lots of twists and turns. I really enjoyed how the identity of Kane was not revealed until later in the book. The story built as the book progressed to an ending I was not expecting. I could read the book again and find a clue I missed the first time.

I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to others. Nathan is close to my age and the book gave me an idea of what it was like to live back then. The book was set on the West Coast, and I was able to imagine what the area might look like. I also found it interesting to read about the local Indians and their way of life. I thought it was neat that the lighthouse is still there today. Ghost Canoe is a fast paced book that is easy to read. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery. Lastly, it is a great account about the history of the expansion of our country and how the west was settled.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - *~A Chilling Story~*
*~I really liked this book because it keeps the pages turning. At the begining of the book it was okay but then in the 2nd chapter it got really good. Every time I read more I got more into it. One thing I like about Hobbs is that he investigates his setting then writes about it. I would have loved to go to all the places he went. One more thing would be that he keeps the suspision.~*

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Drew's Book Review
This story takes place in Tatoosh. It is about a 14 year old boy named, Nathan MacAllister, who has a huge curiosity. He has a thing for adventure, and is the son of a light house keeper.

Nathan's mom was very sick so his dad thought they needed to move to town to improve her health. While they were there, Nathan met Captain Bim and they became good friends.

One time when they were fishing, Nathan saw some weird smoke coming from behind the mountains, but he ignored it. Soon after, Captain Bim's store was robbed. Later, Nathan was exploring in the woods and he came upon a strange canoe that was in a tree. He told Captain Bim about the canoe and he explained to him that it was a burial for the Mahaka.

Later in the story Nathan meets a man named, Jack Kane. Nathan is very suspicious about Kane, because he showed up after they found the wreckage of the canoe. He then finds out that Kane is a treasure hunter and he is looking for Spanish gold. Nathan finds the treasure map. Kane uses the map to get the gold. The Mahaka chase Kane in the canoe, but before they can catch him, he threw the gold into the water. Kane then jumps down a cliff to escape. While trying to climb back up the cliff, he gets too weak and falls to his death. The gold was given to Nathan and his family so that they can move to California and have a farm.

The theme of the book is full of adventure and excitement. It tells the reader to never give up.

If you like a book that is full of thrills, this would be the perfect book for you! I would strongly recommend this book to any of the readers who are fans of Sherlock Holmes books as it is filled is mystery, murder, and excitement.

I think the genre for this book would be fiction because I don't think this could ever really happen.

My rating for this book would be a 9.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I am not a book person but I had to do a project for school and I choose this book. I was really impressed with the way the book keep my attention during my reading. After I finished a chapter I would just keep going. I normally never ever read even if I have a book report to do. Not with this book I actually read the book and I am glad that I took the time to read the book because it was a very good book. Now I have done a couple book reports before but none of the books were any good they were just books that I randomly picked off the shelf and said that I was going to read it. That was never the case I would just make things up or copy and paste. This book as one of the ones that I fortunately did not do that with. I would definitely recommend this book to any one no matter their age it was a good read and they will like the book. What I liked most about the book was the adventure and the suspense of the shocking information the things that you don't expect to happen do and I think that was the reason that I kept reading the book.
