Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian - Review
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian appears to meet the criteria of a memoir taken from Sherman Alexie's life on the Spokane Indian Reservation while he attended high school in an Anglo town 20 or so miles to the south. This is rich material filled with insights ranging from a profound quote by Vince Lombardi to the quality of friendship through thick and thin times.

Unfortunately, there is a slim chance that his memorable work will ever find itself on the shelves of school libraries and into the hands of young adult readers without major abridgement. Many of the themes and a good deal of the language do not fit with standard considerations of what is considered appropriate reading material for young adult readers however wonderful and true-to-life the book is. This being the case, the work is a worthy purchase for parents of mature teens who are available to read and discuss this memoir with their children.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
This is an amazing book! Written from a teenager's point of view, it offers honest opinions and facts of how Junior deals with being torn between two cultures, Indian and white. It is not a challenging read, but it does challenge the mind. I recommend it to anyone who lives in Washington State. It will open your eyes to the rest of our state other than coffee, computers and planes.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - great book for Eastern Washingtonians of any age
Sherman Alexie always finds a way to capture how life was in Eastern Washington. It makes me feel nostalgic, and amazed at how very uncomfortable growing up there was. It has been quite a while since I was back, but the memories come flowing back reading this book. This book is definitely not just for young adults, us older people can really be touched by the honesty and humor of it too.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - humanity on many different levels examined
A thought inspiring work which young and old can learn from. Mr. Alexie, has honed his art to a degree which demands readers seriously examine their beliefs and ways of interacting with others, whether family, friends, or strangers. A healthy dose of what it means to be human, with all its strenghts and weaknesses and how we can begin to respect others who we "see" as different from ourselves.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Terrific book for pre-teens to adult
This is a book I began reading with my 12 year old daughter, but she took it away and finished it on her own first, which says something. It was funny, at times, and instructive of the life of a child/adolescent on a Reservation. The plight of Native Americans as seen through this thoroughly appealing resilient child was clear and outright. This means that at times it was rough, provocative, bit offerred plenty of opportunity for discussion and learning. Was his experience entirely different from that of other adolescents with special needs or talents? How much of his story is about racism or typical adolescent struggles? It wasn't all like that, though, at times it was downright funny. We'd highly recommend it to both kids and adults.
