It is not a loud annoying sound like some cheap toys are. We also had the large lollipop Remo drum already, which we all enjoy. I also have a 18 month old. There is a mallet for each of them and they both play on it at the same time. But, I put the mallets up when not in use because these mallets are wrapped and tied. Lollipop mallet is not wrapped. The sound is terrific. It is an authentic and sturdy drum. You might need to be careful with the kids. My 5-year old stepson stood on top of it, and it didn't break.
