What looked like fun actually ends up making witch craft look ok for kids. It quite simply is not.

Klaatu: This comes from our own planet, but if you threaten to extend your violence, this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder. Your choice is simple: join us and live in peace, or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We shall be waiting for your answer. The decision rests with you."IMDB

'The Day the Earth Stood Still' was one of the first movies in the 1950's to explore space travel and to provide a warning that "the use of violence as a solution to ... Read More:

It's definitely one of my favorites of all time because it's got stuff that most movies don't have: Everything. MGM and company unintentionally created a work of popular art that could only be fully appreciated in its original, pristine print, 70mm, super widescreen glory. It is no longer possible to make a film like Ben-Hur. Oh, George Lucas tries with all his computerized graphics, but this is a REAL spectacle, not some virtual one. 8,000 extras, tens of thousands of costumes, a $15 million budget (in the 1950's!), ... Ben Hur is my favourite film of all time and I have seen it many times since I first saw it as a schoolboy in Dublin in 1960. Naturally when the 4 disc version became available I got it straight away. Everything was perfect, the film itself, the earlier version and the extras on the 4th disc but the documentary "Directed by William Wyler" which was widely advertised as being on the box set is literally nowhere to be seen. I'm slightly perplexed as to why nobody (including myself I must confess) has posted this query since ... Read More:

This is one of the great romantic movies; perhaps the best movie of Frank Capra's career; probably the best of Ronald Colman's. It runs about 2 hours and 34 minutes and never seems slow, even in the reflective scenes.

Robert Conway (Ronald Colman), a diplomat and soldier, his brother and three others escape on the last plane out of a war-torm Chinese town. The plane is highjacked and heads for the Himilayas, where it crashes. The crew is dead, the passengers stranded in freezing weather and deep snow. A band of natives ... Read More:

"The Asphalt Jungle" is one of the few Hollywood films to follow the Russian tradition of picture-making; for the film does not include actors who are "stars" in the accepted sense of the word, but people who have been encouraged to "sink" their characters fully into the roles they are playing. Even Marilyn Monroe - in one of her first film parts - is not listed in the opening credit titles.
The movie captures perfectly the weaknesses of human nature that comes from greed & the wish to have more than one`s "fair share" . The contrast ... Read More:

Five and a half stars for this. TDTESS is a great film; entertaining, well acted - Michael Rennie is stone cold superb, he totally makes the part and the Mom, the kid and the Prof are all good; good direction - it keeps you hooked from the start; music by Hermann; the pace is spot on and the story and premise convincing. This is one of the best films ever with a message more pertinent than ever. Buy it for someone and then borrow it - you'll want your own copy. Apparently there's a remake in the pipeline due 2008, but even if it's great, this film is a tremendous ... Read More:

Contrary to what the cover may suggest, this is a black and white film of the kind that demonstrates how well the medium could be used by a master of the craft. Based on the early life of Empress Catherine the Great it begins with her arrival at court as a young naive bride for the insane Emperor and ends with her triumphant accession as sole Empress of all the Russias. The viewer is drawn into a deadly game of plot and counter plot where the whim of an insane Emperor is the only law and death the penalty for failing to outwit him. The Court is a labyrinth of shadowy corridors, ... Read More:
