'The Golden Compass' is a good family, fantasy adventure and starts off being very promising. The children actors aren't too bad to watch, Kidman is very good, the various plot elements were intriguing and the effects were of good standard. This had a great cast of both on screen actors, as well as voice over actors and the costumes and sets were pretty impressive. I enjoyed the film most of the way through until I reached the ending which left so much unresolved and set itself up for a sequel. ... Read More:

The film at the cinema was good, but rushed. The pacing was poor...they tried very hard to cram in as much as possible and you could tell. I am now waiting for the real extended version...NOT this one! Other reviewers have been good enough to point this out. If you've not seen the film yet, wait for the (hopefully) much longer version: the pacing is sure to be very much better which should make for a much more enjoyable experience all round.

At first, my wife and I thought it just had a long arty f@rty starting, but after 25 minutes of loud shouty bizarre colour schemes we got a head ache and gave up.

Our advice, unless you are arty f@rty or are just trying to impress someone, don't bother watching this tripe.

I wish I could have given this a negative number 0 is too kind and giving it a 1 is far too generous.

Your decision to buy this Blu Ray will rest on the 2 things, how big a Batman fan you are and wether you liked the film.

I say the above as many fans have debated for years the fact that the 2 Tim Burton films are the only ones worth bothering with as this and Batman and Robin have often been slagged off. I personaly liked both this and Batman and Robin, and certainly whilst they are the 2 worst Batman films they do have a few things going for them.

If you liked this film then the Blu ray release is worth getting ... Read More:

Being a huge fan of the novel, and Woolf too, I was interested to see how they could pull off the adaptation of a story which relies so heavily on the modernist model of internal monologue and stream of consciousness. The answer? They haven't. Nicole Kidman's performance (which mainly consists of frowning and chewing the end of the pencil thoughtfully) is outdone by her nose, the dialogue is ponderous and artificial, and the story ends up losing any of its meaning, descending into vague messages about 'life' which don't end up to a hill of ... Zelda from terrorhawks does her best to try and scare the viewer in this terrible film. Same trick as 'Sickth Sense' and 'Dead Mans Shoes', whereby someone you were watching that you thought was real turns out to be a ghost all along. Cheap tricks like this don't make for an enjoyable film, especially as there is no such thing as ghosts. Why do people keep making ghost films when there is absolutely positively no proof for their existence except the anecdotal sort from half wits, drunks and the elderly? The house is nice where it was filmed though, and ... Read More:

This film starts with a lot of promise. The cinematography is great, the lead actors are fantastic, and the initial stages of threat built upon the invasion scenario are well done.
Then it all seems to go wrong.
The transition between the covert invasion and the fight for survival is a bit too abrupt. There also seemed to be serious editing issues which give the film a slightly disjointed feel.
Whilst the film does have issues, I enjoyed it and I would recommend it to friends for some no-brainer sci-fi action.

The story line is loosely based on a book by Alice Hoffman. It is more of the screen play by Robin Swicord who also did the screen play for "Matilda" (1996).

Sisters Sally Owens (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman) are brought up by their maiden aunts after their parents died. They learn of magic and its pluses and minuses by observing their aunts from a distance. They also have to overcome (if possible) the family curse that the gentlemen in their lives are distending to meat an early demise. One highlight of the movie is when we find that ... Read More:
