It's definitely one of my favorites of all time because it's got stuff that most movies don't have: Everything. MGM and company unintentionally created a work of popular art that could only be fully appreciated in its original, pristine print, 70mm, super widescreen glory. It is no longer possible to make a film like Ben-Hur. Oh, George Lucas tries with all his computerized graphics, but this is a REAL spectacle, not some virtual one. 8,000 extras, tens of thousands of costumes, a $15 million budget ... Read More:

Ben Hur is my favourite film of all time and I have seen it many times since I first saw it as a schoolboy in Dublin in 1960. Naturally when the 4 disc version became available I got it straight away. Everything was perfect, the film itself, the earlier version and the extras on the 4th disc but the documentary "Directed by William Wyler" which was widely advertised as being on the box set is literally nowhere to be seen. I'm slightly perplexed as to why nobody (including myself I must confess) has posted this query since ... Read More:

Captivating film that has stood the test of time. Great storyline and acting. The film also has a positive message about life which many current films dont have. Really enjoyed it. Uplifting. Recommended.

4.The Man From Laramie [1955] starring: James Stewart, Arthur Kennedy, Donald Crisp, Cathy O'Donnell, Alex Nicol

DVD : The Man From Laramie [1955]
The last of the collaborations between James Stewart and director Anthony Mann, The Man From Laramie is the most ambitious even if it isn't always completely successful. On one level it's a standard revenge Western, with Stewart looking for the gunrunners who caused his brother's death, but his hunt takes in rancher Donald Crisp's powerful but dysfunctional dynasty and its divisions as well, and its through them that the film moves into almost mythically tragic territory. With foreman and almost adopted son Arthur Kennedy devotedly but ... Read More:

Even better than the Original

Yes I know its unusual but really ' Another Stakeout ' is a lot more funny than ' Stakeout ' .

Its also presented in the best widescreen Aspect ratio ' 2.35:1 '

If you're a fan of the first you will love this.

For some unknown reason ' Madeleine Stowe ' is not credited even although she is in the film and plays the same part as she had in the original film - ' Maria McGuire '

DVD : The Film Noir Classics Collection, Vol. 4 [1948] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Vol 4 of Warners Excellent noir series has it's moments but Warners are stretching their definition of noir as Mystery Street(Police procedural)IllegaL (courtroom drama)The Big Steal(crime melodrama)and Crimewave(hardboiled cop thriller)cannot be considered real noir.

Act Of Violence(1949)Tough noir(atypical of director Fred Zinnemann's later career)has Van Heflin as wartime coward pursued by crippled ex-comrade Robert Ryan who has a score to settle. Both stars are fine and the ending is excellent.

Mystery Street(1950)John ... Read More:

DVD : The Amazing Mr. X [1948]
The Amazing Mr. X (a `Samba Productions' release) sure doesn't promise much but goes on to deliver a little bit extra. Like the far more accomplished and haunting Nightmare Alley of the previous year, it deals with a phoney spiritualist racket. And, as in that earlier film, the supernatural wraiths and voices prove a poor match for the very natural greed and duplicity that operate on a deeper, darker level than the racket.

Lynn Bari mopes around her big old house by the sea mourning her dead husband. One evening, waiting for her fiancé (Richard Carlson), ... Read More:
