Local Hero is a wholesome story of corporate America meets rural Scotland and modern technology meets old world tradition.

Starring Burt Lancaster and a few other faces that will be known to UK audiences (such as Rikki Fulton and John Gordon Sinclair), Local Hero tells the tale of 'MacIntyre' who is depatched by Knox Oil and Gas in Houston, Texas to negotiate the purchase of a slice of the Scottish coastline in order to convert it into an oil refinery and processing area.

Well, The Leopard, made by Visconti in 1963, is not exactly a film for you if you crave action or drama with fast paced and clear cut narrative. Set in Sicily in the 1860s it's about the old nobility and society giving way to the middle class and a new political order. And in the middle of this we follow Don Fabricio, the Prince of Salina (superbly characterised by Burt Lancaster), as he both tries to handle the change and give in to it. He's intelligent enough to see that it is pointless to fight, and cynical enough ... Read More:

Movies do not come any more swashbuckling than this one. Hey, we have pirates, the Caribbean, villains, heroes, damsels in distress, sword fights, sea battles, inventions, acrobatics aplenty. And all delivered with Burt's legendary smile. It is not a genre spoof, but it does not take itself seriously either.

Watching this film one can perhaps understand why some people took a while to accept Burt Lancaster as a real actor. Not that his acting in this film is bad, but the excellent acrobatic skills we come to admire ... Read More:

From the days when doorstop novels (or at least large chunks of them) were turned into films rather than mini-series, From Here to Eternity may be toned down to please both the censors and the US Army, whose co-operation was vital to the film, but it's still a superb piece of film-making that slips in a few powerful punches between the lines.

Set in Pearl Harbor in the months leading up to the Japanese attack, it focuses on two professional soldiers: Prewitt (Montgomery Clift), a hard-headed ex-boxer given 'the treatment' ... Read More:

the movie is well crafted and staged ,it is a fictional account and it raises some intersting questions about viability of art and value of human life.

the german colonel wants a trainload of stolen modern french art transported to berlin as the allies advance to paris ,he chooses only french painters like cezanne, renoir, picasso, lautrec, manet, van gogh ,matisse ,dufy ,braque and others for reasons known to himself alone ,his excuse to authorities is it is worth billions ,but he is secretly an art lover who worships these as a ... How great it is to come across such gems - great story, sincere acting, and sense of style and genuine menace. At this price it is virtually being given away. Actors and reputation speak for themselves - so won't cover here. What I will say is that the opening episode is astonishly good. Brilliantly composed, lit and acted, it exhudes menace without any explicit violence - just smart talk and attitude. It's a lesson in just how good film making can be - a genuine treat.

...although I loaned the film to a colleague at work who could not see the point of the film. I kinda thought that was partly the essence of it.

I've since read the book too and have to say that I prefer the film although the novel is very well written but there are a few differences between the two.

Well acted, well shot and it is the stuff of dreams. If you can't see the point you won't see the game...

This is a movie centred around a marvellous story.

David Niven plays a 'fake' Major. This is because he hides a secret past which is about to become public knowledge at a small Hotel where he has been staying some time. He is 'sweet' on a 'spinster-ish' woman (Deborah Kerr) who's dominated by her possessive mother (Gladys Cooper) There are other stories within this picture, but the story between 'The Major' and 'Sybil' is by far the most touching and absorbing. There are some wonderful scenes in this, and David Niven gives ... Read More:

If this was the first Steve Martin film I had ever seen I would have missed some of his really good ones because I wouldn't have bothered with any others. I thought the only good thing about it was the way old films were so cleverly used to bring in many old stars that only a granny like me would recognise. This one wont be watched again.
