Does anybody know what is on Disc 2? I suspect there might be some extras and I am hoping one of which is the documentary Shadowing the Third Man, but would like to know for sure before I buy it. Shame that Amazon is sometimes so lax about product descriptions.

I have watched this film five or six times on an old VHS version and every time I watch it, I discover something new and enthralling. The film is superb, bigger than life and definitely one of the greatest ever made!

I was pretty darned intrigued when I heard about this movie. Everything about it seemed to appeal to the darker side of my nature - a French gothic horror movie with an incredibly disturbing, amoral premise. I read a few reviews that were unanimously favourable. Then I saw the haunting imagery on the DVD cover and thought, "I need to see that movie!"

So I've seen it, and sadly I'm not overly impressed. Granted, there are some genuinely unnerving scenes in this film. The excruciatingly long "face ... Read More:

Firstly I have to say that one of the reviews on here seems to be so concerned with the Shameless label and the `great things' they've done with the release of this film that you have to wonder if it comes from independent source!

Ignoring that, Killer Nun is a below average slasher film. It wasn't awful, but certainly not one of the best. There are occasional funny moments and there are one or two decent gore scenes. Ultimately though it was let down by its slow pace, predictability and lack of gore, ... Read More:

This current issue of Senso is truncated as other reviewers have noted. However, what is equally unacceptable is the parlous state of the film stock used for this transfer to DVD. The Technicolor, in the original, was sumptuous, rich and saturated just as Visconti and the Technicolor consultants wanted. He was a wizard at giving his colour films a painterly quality that enhanced the story line in a seductive and thrilling manner. The eye was entranced, the cutting was impeccable and the whole mood evoked was the sum ... Read More:

The MGM DVD (with brown tinted cover) is a poor, blurred release with a heavily cut opening credit sequence. Released in Australia, Switzerland and France in 2005, it was the first attempt made for a DVD release in the English language. The Paramount Region 1 DVD available from amazon.com is the very best, and also the 20th Century Fox DVD, virtually the same as the Paramount print and available from amazon.co.uk is just as good. Don't waste time or money on the MGM DVD.

6.Suspiria [1977] (Region 1) (NTSC) starring: Eva Axen, Joan Bennett, Miguel Bose, Flavio Bucci, Stefania Casini

DVD : Suspiria [1977] (Region 1) (NTSC)
It's easy to find fault with a film that is poorly dubbed and comes in a slightly grainy and blurred print. However, put that to one side and the sheer quality of the filmmaking comes through. The otherworldy and surreal atmosphere is brilliantly created. Even though you know something nasty is about to happen, you can't help but jump. Much of this is due to an astonishing soundtrack that truly makes the film stand out. After you've seen this film you'll appreciate just how crude and amateurish are the typical Hollywood slasher ... DVD : Inferno [1980] (NTSC)
My favourite Argento movie, Inferno is an elaborate and beautifully filmed nightmare, an exercise in 'pure film'. That's all it's meant to be, so forget your conditioning and move beyond the confines of 'story' and 'narrative cohesion'. Lose yourself instead in the magical universe, where the only logic is the logic of dreams and Argento's sole intention is to lead you to a state of near-permanent supernatural dread. Ignored for far too long in favour of its more famous predecessor, Inferno is a violent, hallucinatory masterpiece; a nightmare ... Read More:

Everything about this movie works. If anyone wants to see how a movie should be directed and edited, or a screenplay written, or complex characters acted, or a film photographed, this is the one to flip in the DVD machine.

Holly Martins, a down-on-his-luck writer, shows up in post-war Vienna looking for his old friend, Harry Lime. But he's told Lime died in an accident, the military tell him to go home, and he's attracted to a mysterious woman he sees at Lime's grave. He sticks around, gets different stories about Lime, but finally understands ... Read More:

Roger Vadim's second film with Brigitte Bardot, it follows a simple narrative of a young girl becoming infatuated with the man who has had an affair with her aunt, killed her uncle, and with whom she runs away to help him escape arrest. There is little else to it. Vadim makes best use of the Spanish scenery, treats us to some fascinating camera work, and ensures that Bardot's body is given plenty of exposure.

Bardot, of course, is stunningly beautiful, and she brings charm to the role. She never really hit it off with Hollywood, but she seduces ... Read More:

DVD : A Month by the Lake [1996] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
This sweet-natured romantic comedy found only a limited audience when it came out, probably because it's the story of two middle-aged people who find themselves improbably drawn to each other.

Miss Bentley (Vanessa Redgrave), a woman of a certain age, has returned for a month to a resort villa on the shores of Lake Como where she and her father had spent summers for 16 years. With talk of war (it's 1937), there are no other English; the guests are Italian and two American ladies. But then Major Wilshaw (Edward Fox) checks in, a confident, charming man who carries ...
